Gerda Holmström taught at Frieman

One of the many elementary school teachers was Gerda Holmström. She became a resident of Raahe in 1897 when her husband got a teaching position at the Raahe Seminary and they decided to move to Raahe. Adolf Holmström worked at the Raahe Seminary from 1897 to 1900 as a teacher of Christian doctrine, church history, Swedish, and history, and from 1900 to 1919 as the director of the seminary. Holmström died in 1919.

Gerda studied and taught

In Raahe, Gerda developed her skills by studying at a seminar and completing the course required of elementary school craft teachers in 1910. In addition, she observed teaching at the seminar's training school from 1906 to 1910. She monitored and supervised the home visits of pupils attending Raahe Secondary School and its three continuation classes from 1910 to 1919. She completed the lyceum's course in all subjects.

She received certificates from the seminar teachers for knowledge corresponding to the seminar curriculum in religion, mother tongue, history, geography, mathematics, natural sciences, and music. She held the position of handicrafts teacher at the Raahe seminar from May 5, 1903, until the end of the semester.

Becoming a primary school teacher as an adult

Gerda's career as a primary school teacher began in adulthood. In 1920, at the age of 50, following the death of her husband, she received a primary school teacher's certificate from the Raahe Seminary on the basis of a special exemption granted by the Council of State. "The Council of State has reviewed this application and deemed it appropriate to grant the widow of the seminary director, Gerda Holmström, the right to apply for and, based on her skills and merits, obtain positions as a primary school teacher in the country..."

According to the official newspaper, Mrs. Gerda Holmström was selected and approved as a teacher for the lower grades of the public schools in Raahe in 1920. At least in 1924, he also worked as a part-time teacher at the Raahe Business School.

According to an article in Raahen Seutu newspaper, she retired from her position as a teacher at an all boys' school in 1937. Gerda Holmström died on October 23, 1943, in Raahe.

A variety of activities at Frieman House
